北山白云里，隐者自怡悦。相望试登高，心随雁飞灭。

愁因薄暮起，兴是清秋发。时见归村人，平沙渡头歇。

天边树若荠，江畔舟如月。何当载酒来，共醉重阳节。

这首诗的景物描写和诗人的感情抒发，是交错展开，互为因果的。如果没有“心随雁飞灭”、“兴是清秋发”的生动传情的自然景象，就表现不出诗人酷爱清新雅淡山水之个性。“雁飞灭”、“清秋发”不仅交代了时间、节侯，也描摹了秋景和思友的深情，而且情辞高雅，另具一格。在叙述傍晚渡头的村景时，自然地插入“天边树”、“江畔月”的描写，令人意会那景中蕴含着不尽的情意，从宁静而富有诗意的村居中，向友人发出真挚的登山邀约，是很有感召力的。清人翁方纲说：“读孟公诗，且无论怀抱，无论格调，只其清空幽冷，如月中闻磬，石上听泉”。（《石洲诗话》）此诗正是代表孟公韵致飘逸、感受清新、风格雅淡的佳作。晚唐诗人皮日休在《郢州孟亭记》中曾有比较，认为“先生之作遇景入咏，不拘奇抉异，令龌龊束人口者，(氵亟)(氵亟)然有干霄之兴。若公输氏当巧不巧者也。北齐美萧悫有‘芙蓉露下落，杨柳月中疏’先生则有‘微云淡河汉，疏雨滴梧桐。’乐府美王融有‘日霁沙屿明，风动甘泉浊’先生则有‘气蒸云梦泽，波撼岳阳城’。谢脁之诗句精者有‘露湿寒塘草，月映清淮流’，先生则有‘荷风送香气，竹露滴清响’。此与古人争胜于毫厘也。”这一比较分析是有说服力的。当然，孟诗的风格并非只有冲淡平和一种，基于他在仕途受到的挫折，同自己不甘人后的心理冲突，使他情不自禁地在诗中涌现巨大的感情波澜，形成他山水诗创作中的又一种特色。
